Jack Russell Training: Tips For Owners

By Richard Cussons

As much as education is important to humans, Jack Russell training is as well important to Jack Russell dogs. Through Jack Russell training, you will be molding this small, white-bodied terrier into a pleasantly mannered dog everybody loves to be around. And besides, Jack Russells tend to be extremely intelligent, athletic and fearless. It is not unusual for these to become problematic if they are not properly trained.

Apart from being a popular household pet, a Jack Russell is also known as working terrier ideal in hunting and tracking. But regardless of your purpose for having a dog - be it to perform circus acts, follow agility commands or just a loyal companion at home, you need to arm yourself with appropriate training methods to achieve your goals. Try to consider Jack Russell training tips below:

Establish the pack leader. Dogs are pack animals. Assume the role of pack leader and let your Jack Russell understand that. It is important that your pet knows who's the boss or else he will assert himself as the leader of the pack and the head of the family.

Early training. Start training your Jack Russell puppy early, say the first time the puppy comes home with you (which is usually around eight weeks of age). Start with socialization period first before training basic commands such as down, sit, stay and so on. Socialization period is beneficial because it is during this period in which puppies develop emotional attachment and social relationships that can affect his life.

Use positive training method. As much as possible, use positive training method; for every good behavior, reward him with his favorite food treat, time to play with you or social interaction with other dogs.

Avoid punishment. Punishment, especially physical, should not be imposed when your dog has done something unacceptable. It will never help you achieve successful Jack Russell training, instead, will just create additional problems. If you caught your dog in the act of making mistake, do something to distract him; making loud noise and so on.

Be consistent. Consistency is one of the factors that contribute to successful Jack Russell training. If you are not consistent, you will just confuse your pet.

Jack Russell may tend to be fearless, aggressive and stubborn at times, but with proper training, you will eventually have a loving and intelligent working dogs you can be proud of.
